Dear Asa,

I agree with your approach. After my engine building
education based on my own mis-adventures and the help of mentors, I
first make my own best measurements, but I depend on my professional
machinist's measurements and judgment. It does sound like after the
engine has had a thorough cleaning and sonic check that is hopefully
favorable, then the other points you raised should be checked by the
pro. Progress.

                       Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

I'm using a bore micrometer similar to this:

I won't swear on my quick measurements (they were quick and dirty)
and I agree it doesn't seem like a lot of wear.  BUT, I can see this
engine certainly has some miles.  Several cam lobes show wear,
though the lifters seemed okay (but flat).  One of the cam bearings
was split and broken in two.  I'm wondering if the cam bore is
misaligned; something I'll need the machine shop to check.  (I guess
it could be a crooked cam but probably not so much)

Agree, first thing to do is have block checked for bore thickness
(sonic check) and cracks, etc.  I'm not buying any parts yet.  At
the same time I'll probably have the shop measure the bores to see
what they get.  I'll have to start calling around to different
machine shops shortly.

We all know Mad Dawg's tool is short, so that may be why I'm
getting an inaccurate measurement.  ;)

      Welcome home Dawg,

      Asa  Jay

maybe its a really low time engine, who knows.  It is
difficult to make accurate inside bore measurements.

Before getting too far into it I'd want to do a sonic check
and a mag.

well that's interesting since the original
factory bore is 4..000 ! :)

How are you measuring ?  What type of tool
are you using?

A quick mic check of all

I would say that stock
