You should, very telling what you can find stuck to the filter element.
I'd still have the oil sent out as well.
I'd expect some scuffing, plating from the rings and residual gasket (RTV)
material.
Be looking for steel and aluminum shavings, chunks, and any water/collant
content
in the oil at all.
16 mpg sounds good, once you get the new shoes on it, be curious to learn
the sizes of everything
and the actual speed using a GPS versus indicated speeds.
