[TPR] Asa's Engine rebuild update - eggs

Some thoughts:

So, we are shimmng 1/2 or .001" ?????? Hmmmmm.

DANGERDANGERDANGER

called my machinist (John) - you owe him a 12 pack of Modelo Especial . . .

First, John said one used to be able to buy .001 bearings. Shimming is from Model A days and he didn't recommend. What John would recommend is to mic the journals at least four different places to determine if the journals are egg-shaped for some reason. If still round, look for the .001 tighter bearings. Alex at Moneymaker or Russ should know if these are available. If you have egg shaped journals (I'd check the rods, too) turn the crank. Hope you found a good machine shop!

Note: John and I plastigauged my brgs dry - I've never heard of oil . . . .

I trust John's experience way more than my personal opinion - and always call when I'm not sure.

Good luck!

David

Asa, I've never done that (shimming), so not sure. I've always checked clearance with oil (operating conditions) on all bearing surfaces (not dry) so not sure if that makes any difference. I also use oil or grease to hold the plastigauge where I wanted it.

Hopefully you'll hear from Russ or some other knowledgeable engine guy.

  Anyone?
JB, any opinion on the use of shim stock to tighten up the tolerance on
  the main bearings?
