[TPR] Come and get these memories (as Martha and Vandellas would say). Re: Thought for the day

When I was nine, we had just moved to the Fairfax area in Los Angeles where I started 4th grade.  The girl who lived across the street drove by one day on her bike and said, "Say, do you want to ride bikes together and be friends?"  How sweet was that!  We're still friends to this day. In fact she was such a good friend she'd give me rides on the back of her bike for blocks upon blocks so I could drag my feet to wear out the brown Girl Scout shoes my mother thought were healthy for my feet.  I hated them so!!!! Job accomplished but my Mother brought them back to the store to complain of how fast they wore out, and much to my chagrin they gave her a brand new pair.   My bike buddy, Ruthie, actually lived in the same apt. building as Phil Spector when he was a teenager.  Phil and his buddy Marshall Leib were ALWAYS polishing their cars in front of the apartments.  (RIP Marshall, who passed away from a heart attack in 2002 on way to a Car Night event. Marshall and Phil were the two fellows along with Annette Kleinbart of the singing group, "The Teddy Bears."  If you are old enough, do you remember the song, "To Know him is to Love him?"   (https://www.dailydoowop.com/the-teddy-bears-to-know-him-is-to-love-him/) And here's Marshall bio:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_LeibMarshall also managed many other famous singers and groups of the day like the Everly Bros.  Marshall was a big Ferrari guy and on the board of FCA and we met at a Car Night event up here in the Valley and became great friends unbeknownst of the past. So back up..... my buddy in crime (Ruthie) in those bygone days and I were quite adventurous.  We would get samples of powder they gave away at the nearby drugstore and do scientific experiments.  Some even with snails in the garden. (sorry snails).  : (  We and a few other friends would hot-wire phone booths with a bobby pin just to call each other from across the street.  I truly believe we are responsible for the new type soda vending machines as the old ones had bottles that were simply locked in but caps visible to pop off with a bottle cap remover... so we'd bring straws and have a refresher.   We figured we'd go for a swim when hot and went wading in the decorative pool in front of Fairfax High with all the mosquito larva and slimy mossy bottom.... definitely not meant for swimmers.  We'd go up and down Fairfax getting free sample of Perals cheesecake and sour pickles from Cantors (a good combo) and anything else good we could find.  We also ate wild plants and berries of all kinds with no idea that something might be poisonous. We'd go to the Fairfax Theatre every Sat. for a part of a movie shown in segments.  I'm still traumatized by one where people were offered a free vacation into space but were actually taken to space for FOOD for the aliens. Yes, Thank God We're Still Alive.. and we're all here to enjoy our memories and today's Holidays in these interesting modern times.  Love to you all! Laurie   : )

Oh yes, a large Dominos Destroyer on a Friday night lounging on the couch and watching movies.  Good thing we could sleep in on Saturday.  :D

Reading all your fond memories of growing up warms my heart. Be it the 50’s or 70’s or my own kids growing up in the 90’s it was for sure a great time in America. My kids like to remind me how much they enjoyed going to Blockbuster Video when we also picked up a pizza on Friday nights.
