On the subject of Brakes and Suspension, I had a great phone call with
Eric Pettersen yeserday. Eric is the tire tech guy at SSCC.
Eric reps Global West and Baer Brakes. He actually talked me -out- of a
good group of different parts, instead pointing me to Mustang vendors
and saying I don't really need anything fancy for some of it. However,
I will be buying new upper and lower control arms, strut rods and
subframe connectors through him. We settled on a good set of quality
parts that will give me more camber and more caster adjustment.
Since I need to replace pretty much everything in the brake department
(have you -seen- the photos?), I'm leaning toward a Baer twin piston PBR
replacement for the front, and potentially the rear as well. Eric is
working with me on that. I need to get the rear wheels off the axles so
I can get into the rear drum brakes for an inspection before I commit on
the brake package.
Right now, it's looking like a few thousand dollars will go into
suspension and brakes, but it's where a lot of quality counts. Stock
might do just fine and it would save me a lot of money, but for a
premium I'll get much, much better parts that will serve me well in the
handling and braking department.
Time for a flashback.
I remember getting the Mach I up to 120 on the speedo one day and then
needing to brake aggressively due to running out of room. I ended up
with brake fade so bad I nearly missed the corner I needed to take. I
won't need that kind of braking on an open road course, but it will be
nice to know I shouldn't have that kind of brake fade again.
Still lots to do.
