[TPR] Dawgs car

Update.
Bypassed the ammeter. The ring terminals on the wires were nearly
black with oxidation instead of copper colored. I did my best with
what was available to get good contact material exposed. Hooked all
wires to one post bypassing the gauge. Running voltage is now between
14.5 and 15 when running. We'll test it again when we get to Ely.
We didn't pull the engine cover to get a better look at the
alternator. From the engine side where I can look through the
decklid, it looks to have one multi-wire (three or four) connector on
the back and pointing out the side. I think I can definitely say it
doesn't look like an older-style Ford. It may be a newer Ford or a
GM, I don't know.
Load from the starter seems okay and it's cranking alright on the new battery.
I think the alternator is working. I'm wondering if Dawg's old
battery (not that old mind you) has suffered damage due to
over-charging. If it's been running at 15.5V, what might that do to
an Optima? Yes, the auto store load tested it and said it was good,
but I recall having batteries that load tested fine (or seemed to at
the store) but really were shot.
Certainly it looks like the ammeter is getting close to being a fire
hazard so we need to replace it with a new one or a volt meter.
At this point the car is loaded and Dennis is strapping it down.
We'll take a closer look at things tomorrow with Peter and Mark.
I'm guessing we should make it there by 1800.
