Hey all,
You might recall we purchased a new (used) 1994 Ford F250 XLT
Powerstroke 4x4 truck last year. We sold the 40 year old Jeep pickup
plow truck and replaced it with this.
The plan is to use this truck as my tow rig this year. The friend who's
been helping me troubleshoot the Pantera has offered me his car trailer
for the event. The truck has needed some work before I'd take it on a
long trip like this though. That's why -this- year I got the
transmission rebuilt. You heard that story earlier to the tune of
nearly $4,000. Yes, it just happens to be a ZF five-speed too. I wish
it had been the one in my Pantera, but it doesn't need it that bad yet.
Anyway, I did the front brakes a while back after the right front locked
up on me. New calipers, hoses and pads later, the front is now
awesome. Tonight I attacked the rear. WOW! The left had chunks of the
brake pad floating in the drum; that's what was causing my intermittent
lock-ups back there. The right shoes look good but will get replaced
too. Both rear wheel cylinders are leaking on the rear side and look
like they have dust seals that are two sizes too big. Methinks someone
used the wrong rebuild kits at some point in the past.
I'll be putting new wheel cylinders, new shoes and new spring sets on
each side tomorrow. I'll also empty and bleed the rear with new fluid.
The good news is, the axle and hub seals appear to be clean, dry and
serviceable. I don't detect any leakage. I had been afraid the left
rear lockup was caused by grease getting on the shoes; turns out it
wasn't that at all. Whew! Pulling axles on this truck is a PITA. :)
Mark's carb and Peter's rack should be getting here late this week or
early next.
One step at a time.
