[TPR] Tires for Asa's Cat

Dear Asa,

That might have been me. I put some Sumitomos HTZ on the
more genteel Pantera about eight years (?) ago. They were inexpensive and
I think that they're a good value. The tires you're looking at are HTZ II.
I certainly can't tell you about the latest iteration nor about how well
they would tolerate and perform under autocross conditions. IMHO, "they
are good tires, but certainly not great tires". Another way to think
about them: if they're in your budget and you've upgraded the suspension,
then buy'em and flog'em. With the new set up, you'll still be ahead of the
stock set up and once you've taken the measure of the new set up and worn
out the Sumis, then you can plan for something else.....

                          Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

Subject: [TPR] Tires for Asa's Cat

I'm now looking for good tires to put on the Pantera. I'm looking for
something both street and race. I could go with another set of Toyo Proxes
888, but I don't really think I need to do that. Especially when they are
over $200 each and I'm 'trying to save some money here.

In fact, I'd like to keep it all under $150 each if I could. I know the
better tires are probably going to be near $200, and if I need to, I'll go
there. Before I do though, I'd like to get some tire opinions.

Specifically I'm looking at a name I've not seen before, Sumitomo:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Sumitomo&tireModel=HTR+Z+II
&partnum=44WR7HTRZ2V2&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes

I thought I'd heard someone else say something about them so they caught my
eye.

I used to be a big fan of Pirelli, then I was a loyal Goodyear customer for
years.
The Pirelli's are a bit steep.
If I go with Goodyear, it would most likely be the Eagle F1 Asymmetric or
the Eagle GT.

Well, if nothing else.... 17" wheels have given me a whole lot more choices
for rubber.
