[TPR] WHERE HAVE ALL THE OLD CARS GONE?? Re: SS 2011

The goal of the 70 MPH run is to allow folks to get their mile markers dialed in outside of the 'ticket' window - ie if you get a ticket on 318 within 30 days of the next race you are DQ'd...
Besides, it's a fun drive - for me that is a 1200 mile round trip...
Now if I can get enough cars to run and a pair of folks to do start/finish line timing we're on :-)

hi guys,
here are some thoughts from Durango . . .
*I have run the 318, SORC and BBORR courses at legal speeds - the
difference between 75 and 95 is HUGE. Other than learning where the road goes,
I'm not sure its worth the time. Just my opinion.
*not sure I want to run another ORR without the Pantera!
*not sure I want to run another ORR and ruin my perfect trophy record (yes,
I know its not important)
*not sure I want to miss another ORR.
*"details" in my life are a little up in the air, we'll have to see what
happens.
Fact: ORR is great fun!
later,
David

Trying to arrange a 70 MPH target speed (AKA the limit)
run of 318 before the next race to get folks in the groove. Anyone
interested :-)

Well, I arrived Sunday in Vegas, so
for me it was a solid week of fun :-) Make it a
Pantera gathering, Hotel Sam's Town, starting on the
May or September Sunday before the race (Sam's Town is
a 29$/night hotel kiddies with a buffet that is like
6$ for breakfast etc - ie cheap). That gives folks
several days to enjoy each other before the race stuff
begins...
I plan on being in the May and
September events and will definitely do the whole week
thing :-)
Cheers, from Steve (Speed AKA Irish)

Good post Irish.....sorry we didn't get
to spend any time together....another reason these
events need to be longer....
140 cars and too many friends out of that
group who we never get enough time to hang
with.....
Good point on remembering these
guys....the best way we can show our support for
them is coming back in the spring and yea soon as I
get over the part of these guys passing who I knew
for years I will move on.
Again, great idea on motivating Pantera
people to attend.....just showing up and running
100-125 with a old car like the Pantera or a
Mustang, or a Corvette or any old car amazes
people.....I still get messages and questions from
the veterans asking
"WHEN are the Pantera guys coming
back"???.......
Response; "They are retired waiting for
any vintage team to show up with 10 cars....we
invited Corvette (how many million produced?),
Ferrari, Jaguar, Mustang and other clubs several
times....I just gave up on the recruitment biz
because we have a hard time getting 2 panteras to
start....and finish...look at the odds....JB and I
finished SilverState Sunday....there was not one
vintage car in my division...nothing but Vipers,
Z06's, and Porsche's....the oldest car was a 89
Pontiac Firebird....and in JB's case other then
Chris's 77 Ford Cobra II and Oliver Perkins in his
flat black '79 Vette there was not anything older OR
faster...maybe we should just buy NEW cars
heh?
NOOOO F'ING WAY!!!

That said I'm already

get everyone motivated to have the largest

Amen to the joy of old and new
friends!
It's a sad thought that a brief handshake
is all I'll ever know of those good old boys in
the parking lot.
I know Dennis (?) said the media would be
locked down but the Reno media is in a frenzy-I
was told this morning that the two deaths were
reported as "blew a tire at 200mph" at the
Silver State.
Don't forget, the happy pedal works both
ways.
Godspeed.

Still for all those who were looking for an
excuse now to NOT do open road racing this is a
good excuse not to go or at least not to go
fast....Yes, the road is not in as good a shape
as it was and neither is nebraska or Texas but
it is what it is and as you said once if you
need to slow down for the dips or rumble strips
then just slow the fok down....
But going fast and being on the edge is an
adrenlin high......and that was what Rick and
Merle were doing....right on the edge at 190+
mph speeds.
Yea, both these guys will be missed.
I spent half of Thursday and Friday with Rick in
the parking lot his Camaro and my Pantera side
by side.....yea the hard part is seeing someone
go you will miss and know he will be missed more
by his family.

I'm also very sad to hear about the Camaro
accident. Good guys. We all know (or
at least should know) the risks when driving at
ORR events, but that doesn't stop our need for
speed. You do your homework, you prepare
your car, install all the safety equipment you
can afford, and work up in the speed classes
until you've had enough. But at the end of
the day, we all know something can happen and we
end up upside-down in the dessert. The is
no way to eliminate risk. I thought the
road was not in as good of shape as years
past.
In time we will deal with this loss and get
back in the drivers seat. It was great to
get together in Ely and see old friends and some
new ones.

Re: [TPR] SS 2011
Hey Hawk,
Short answer is no.........rumor mill
has mis-ID'd others who were not even in the car
with Rick & Merle....as Rick's son usually
drove and his dad (Rick) usually
navigated....Merle was a stand in which he has
done as navigator many times.....Merle usually
works Tech as did Rick.
I am pretty certain having been here
when these accidents occur that words
like
"excessive speed", 'lost control',
'massive injuries/fire/etc are all gonna be
used....In Ricks case that Camaro was a
beast....full race engine but it also had full
cage and they had all the safety gear including
head/neck/back restraints, fire
suppression.....but its a simple lesson in
physics too. ;-(
190+ on a crowned 2 lane road that
like Nebras and Texas are no where close to
being in good shape.....add the new centerline
rumble strips that caused Moonshine's accident
last year (he was in my race group) I think its
noteworthy to say these kind of accidents are
rare......but those rumble strips in center lane
are little pockets where any road debris, bolts,
nails etc can fall into.....also apexing across
them on sweeper turns at 155-160 as I was and
they shake/rattle the hell out of the
car....everyone's car.....but as someone
said....these are the course
"conditions"......patches of road, dips, blind
hills, canyon road, off camber turns....and all
this on a crowned road.....so running on ragged
edge its just a matter of time and luck to how
long it takes you to either lose control or pick
up someone's debris.....yea speed kills but so
do allot of other things....speed is just a lot
faster.

Unfortunately while JB and I both
finished the run today two of our fellow veteran
racers (Rick DeKneef & Merle Hill) died
today when their Unlimited red Camaro went off
the road, crashed and caught fire....both
reported dead at scene. NDOT and Highway Patrol
investigators put a press lid on
accident.
We're in Reno tonight and headed back to

Reno andand deaths today in Ely its not a great
