>> Wow. I had completely forgotten that Elana Scherr was in my summer group at McPherson. I had completely forgotten Ray Ritchie's photodocumentation of our Drivetrain class. So, I started today with the mating of my brother's 351W stroker
427 engine to his ZF. I got it done and checked my mail at lunch with the surprise of "Doc Engles in the News". I thought the picture was great. I seem to exude competence and competence and fear no transaxle. The truth is that I now know enough to fear
some transaxles and all rear-end pinion gear jobs.
>>
>> I took the drive train class when I noticed a few years ago that students could bring their own "projects" and work on them in class. I did not want to work on a manual transmission. I wanted to work on a transaxle and considered a few
over 18 months. I finally found a salvage Porsche early Boxster transaxle in Nevada, (Texas) for $350. When I told the salvage yard owner that it was for a transmission class, he said that he supported education (!) and proceeded to give me a $100 discount.
I bought the Porsche transaxle for $250. Cleaned it up and took it class where we were able to reach the deep gears. I have seen the inside of one ZF and the Boxster innards were impressive. Once re-assembled, I donated it to McPherson for further teaching
purposes.
>> The best part of McPherson is the students. With rare exceptions they'll are all gearheads and some very interesting gearheads. My lab partner in last year's Electrical class is the only other Pantera owner I have found at McPherson, Owen
Gray, who had *rowed* the Atlantic *alone* for 71(?) days and earlier this year rowed from Monterey Bay, California to Hawaii with another trans-oceanic maniac. This year's lab partner was the very colorful and eccentric British ex-patriate, John Layzell,
who several years ago ran the Peking to Paris road rally in a classic, but race prepped, VW bug! It is a somewhat surreal experience to be trying to figure out how to re-assemble a Porsche transaxle while John is explaining "Cockney rhyming slang"!! ( Bloody
Hell ! :-) Only at McPherson.
