Done with the troubleshoot for now.

We put the Cat on a lift and began muscling the front suspension.
The good news seems to be that the suspension is tight but squeaks
badly because of the OEM style rubber a-arm bushings. The bad news
is that the rack apparently is doing the -same- thing it did prior
to me sending it to Pantera Performance Center in 2013. I thought
it felt "tighter" when I got it back but still had a slightly
noticeable "notchiness" at center steering.

Well, my buddy who owned the GT5 for year drove it and said "this is
dangerous." He referred both the notchiness at center steering and
how tight the rack was. How tight is it? He put it into a full
lock left turn in a cul-de-sac, let go of the wheel and we slowly
drove in a circle; it never went back to center as it should. On
the freeway, he illustrated how he could slightly put pressure in
one direction and then the steering rack would "suddenly" notch-over
and you'd have to catch it.

Mind you, these are all things I've become quite used to, and after
I got the rack back from Pantera Performance Center I thought that's
just the way things were. They were supposed to have replaced both
the rack gear and the pinion gear. Now I'm not certain they did
that, it might be they re-used my gears and just tightened up the
rack.

Needless to say, I'll be pulling the rack again, and before I send
it off, I'll inspect the gear set again.

I'll also be calling Becky on Monday to talk with them about this
and see what we might be able to work out. Either way I slice it,
according to my friend, he wouldn't race this car with the rack
currently in it; and he's raced both rack-and-pinion cars as well as
older sector-gear box cars.

Alright, item number two; the carb.
It definitely is stumbling at low speeds under 2,200 rpm.
Unfortunately, this also translating to stumbling at higher rpms up
to about 4,000. It's my friends opinion the carb is causing my
vibration at freeway speeds under load. I think he might be right.

He's recommending a new carb, a Quick Fuel. We looked at a 750 with
electric choke and mechanical secondaries. This one to be exact:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/qft-ss-750-an

So, my expense sheet just went up several hundred dollars, which I
don't readily have.

JB, would you consider loaning me your carb or do you have any
others laying around for the cause?
Dawg, do you have any old four barrel carbs laying around?
Anyone else?
How about a spare steering rack? At this point I want a total
replacement so I can see if there really is a difference.

Mind you, I have -never- driven another Pantera, except once at a
Tech Session at Roger Sharp's back in about 1998 and then all we did
was drive it around the block. I've not known there should be a
difference in how the steering should feel.

So I need to get a line on a carb and steering rack before I even
think about ordering tires.
That's the update from here.
