This guy is like the Dick Drenske of my generation. He and I are
about the same age, but he's WAY more car guy than me. He's gone
through more classic cars than I can count, used to race with his
Dad who was a great car guy too. He rode passenger as I drove and I
pointed out what -I- was feeling. He observed technical details
like engine rpm while hanging on to the roll cage to gauge
vibrations.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
Then he took the wheel to confirm other suspicions and really had
many bad things to say about the steering. Yea... I trust this
guy. He owned a Pantera GT5 for years, only recently trading it for
a 1968 Shelby Mustang collectible of some sort. He's owned Ferrari,
AC Cobra, has an old Pontiac Trans Am that he races. He's got more
car experience right now than I will probably ever have before I
die.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
If I can get the parts together, he and I will make sure this Cat is
ready.<br clear="none">

Done with the troubleshoot for now.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
We put the Cat on a lift and began muscling the front
suspension. The good news seems to be that the suspension is
tight but squeaks badly because of the OEM style rubber a-arm
bushings. The bad news is that the rack apparently is doing
the -same- thing it did prior to me sending it to Pantera
Performance Center in 2013. I thought it felt "tighter" when
I got it back but still had a slightly noticeable "notchiness"
at center steering.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
Well, my buddy who owned the GT5 for year drove it and said
"this is dangerous." He referred both the notchiness at
center steering and how tight the rack was. How tight is it?
He put it into a full lock left turn in a cul-de-sac, let go
of the wheel and we slowly drove in a circle; it never went
back to center as it should. On the freeway, he illustrated
how he could slightly put pressure in one direction and then
the steering rack would "suddenly" notch-over and you'd have
to catch it.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
Mind you, these are all things I've become quite used to, and
after I got the rack back from Pantera Performance Center I
thought that's just the way things were. They were supposed
to have replaced both the rack gear and the pinion gear. Now
I'm not certain they did that, it might be they re-used my
gears and just tightened up the rack.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
Needless to say, I'll be pulling the rack again, and before I
send it off, I'll inspect the gear set again.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
I'll also be calling Becky on Monday to talk with them about
this and see what we might be able to work out. Either way I
slice it, according to my friend, he wouldn't race this car
with the rack currently in it; and he's raced both
rack-and-pinion cars as well as older sector-gear box cars.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
Alright, item number two; the carb.<br clear="none">
It definitely is stumbling at low speeds under 2,200 rpm.
Unfortunately, this also translating to stumbling at higher
rpms up to about 4,000. It's my friends opinion the carb is
causing my vibration at freeway speeds under load. I think
he might be right.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
He's recommending a new carb, a Quick Fuel. We looked at a
750 with electric choke and mechanical secondaries. This one
to be exact:<br clear="none">
<a class="yiv2691514970moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://www.summitracing.com/parts/qft-ss-750-an" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" shape="rect">http://www.summitracing.com/parts/qft-ss-750-an</a><br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
So, my expense sheet just went up several hundred dollars,
which I don't readily have.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
JB, would you consider loaning me your carb or do you have any
others laying around for the cause?<br clear="none">
Dawg, do you have any old four barrel carbs laying around?<br clear="none">
Anyone else?<br clear="none">
How about a spare steering rack? At this point I want a total
replacement so I can see if there really is a difference.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
Mind you, I have -never- driven another Pantera, except once
at a Tech Session at Roger Sharp's back in about 1998 and then
all we did was drive it around the block. I've not known
there should be a difference in how the steering should feel.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
So I need to get a line on a carb and steering rack before I
even think about ordering tires.<br clear="none">
That's the update from here.<br clear="none">
