<p>Agreed...I briefly met Stormin Norman and Dick Cheney in 1991 in Saudi. And later met General Powell. I was greatly impressed with all the men but particularly impressed with the general who.was a living legend in Nam having won 3 silver stars among other decorations for valor.</p>
<p> Colin Powell who had served with Schwarzkopf in Nam and were friends had lobbyied effectively that limited counterinsurgency warfare did not win the war in Nam and would not win the war in Iraq. </p>
<p>I have read the biographies of both men and both generals got assurances from the sec of defense cheney and then prez George H Bush Sr. that they would get the army they needed (750,000 troops) for the attack and liberation accross a broad front into Kuwait and Iraq... Powell assured Scwarzkopf that he would get the maximum number of forces he needed to go into Kuwait and Iraq which was 550,000 Americans and 200,000 allied forces..yea mainly support troops.</p>
<p>Later George H Bush was criticized for not allowing Schwartzkopf to continue the mission in 1991 to go all the way to Baghdad...we now know Bush Sr. was correct in stopping at the liberation of Kuwait....We liberated Kuwait and THAT was the mission.</p>
<p>Ten + years later when General Tommy Franks was commanding forces in invasion of Iraq he let the Pentagon armchair quarterback chicken hawks dictate how large or how small a invasion force would be used which was less then half the troops need to both invade and 'secure' Bagdhad.</p>
<p> Invasion by Franks forces was textbook perfect. Securing Baghdad however was a failure and rioting and looting and general chaos ensurd not only in Baghdad but also the rest of Iraq. Eventually General TOMMY got relieved and we got Gen. Petraeus and Oderino to take over "managing" the war....both great generals but set more in the conventional get-along management style of the time.</p>
<p>You can debate when we should have declared victory in Iraq or now Afghanistan but you cant tie the hands of our miltary's best hard charging generals and expect them to win any war in the future. </p>
<p>Iraq is history now but many have suggested we would be better off having declared victory in afghanistan when Seal Team 6 took out Osama. Now we are once again stuck in a country (like Nam) whose government is corrupt and hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars, of weapons, equipment and donated materials have disappeared or been lost to Afghan corruption.</p>
<p>That aside, yes, we were blessed to have great "leaders" like Bush Senior and Stormin Norman. Cant say the same for the last two presidents....but I sure respected General Schwartzkopf</p>
