I nearly followed Jack's article in the January 2006 newsletter to a
T, in order to make my one piece firewall cover into a two-piece.
The only deviation I made was to make the top cut right where the
fiberglass transitioned from the bubble to the padded roll area,
instead of a half inch -below- which the article recommended. I
wanted as much clearance as possible to get the hatch back in, so I
made the cut higher.

NOW... I can't get my hatch in place because the top interferes.
The width is correct and clears nicely, but the very bottom of the
padded roll is in the way by about a quarter inch from getting the
top of the hatch in place. I'm stuck now and not exactly sure how
I'm going to proceed. I may have to remove another quarter inch
from the padded roll but then my bubble will be short and the padded
roll will look funky with a kind of -rise- on the bottom in the
center. I'll have to play with it a bit more. I have a 1973 L
model. Not sure how different it is from earlier models this mod
has been done on.

But, I'm not too happy about it.

Of course... it was the -last- thing I tried tonight, after
installing the roll bar and harnesses. Yes, I installed the bolts
from the inside out, so the nuts show on the outside and they've all
been double-nutted. The opening in the hatch looked big enough so I
didn't worry about a test fit. Now I might regret it. It took me
about two hours to get the roll bar and harnesses installed. If I
have to take it all back out, it should be less time, as the
harnesses are already attached now (looped over the tubing) and I've
got the method down for installing the bolts in the rockers.

<sigh>

I have an all day trip to Portland tomorrow. I catch a plane at 6AM
and don't get home till after 10PM. No work on the car tomorrow. I
was hoping to drive it to work on Wednesday, but now that I can't
get the hatch in place, I won't be able to. I'll have to do a -lot-
of driving this weekend to catch up on my break-in miles.

Today, I took the plunge of
hacking up my perfectly good (well
not -perfectly- good, but you get
the idea) firewall cover. Using the
instructions provided by Jack DeRyke
in the POCA newsletter, January 2006
edition, I cut the bubble out of my
firewall cover. <gasp>

Well, I -had- planned on keeping it
in one piece for posterity, but
being a bit cheap these days decided
to go ahead and try for a
two-piece. If I ever want to have a
one piece again... I'll buy one
later.

It was -not- as easy as Jack made it
out to be. In my case, I had to
remove the entire surround trim that
goes up one side, across the top and
down the other side. There was no
way for me to remove the vinyl at
the top of the bubble without doing
so. -That- is a pain in the ass
job.

Once I got that off, the rest went
pretty easy. I hope I got it cut in
the right place, because it's a done
deal now. I've not tried it in the
car yet; it's after quitting time
for today. I got the trim back on
the main panel and tried to glue the
vinyl wrapped on the backside.
Tomorrow I'll wrap and glue the
bubble, then try it all out for
size.

I also drilled the shoulder bolt
holes in the rear hoop of my cage.
I also picked up a 10" air cleaner
from Napa, cheap, and will run it
until I can get the proper
sized/shaped one from K&N. Oh,
and with that, Shelley and I put the
deck lid on too.

Monday, I start driving it to work
daily to get the engine broken in.
I'll take it all in for powder
coating and install the whole
thing. I also need to look at
sourcing some roll bar padding. I
guess I better start looking that
up now. :)

I think vacation is over.
