Okay guys......I am pretty frustrated......

As some of you know I wanted to get ready for efi tuner tomorrow who is coming to install wide band sensor and gauge in the Pantera.

I planned to replace my 160 with a 180F Thermostat because my water temps were running too cool on the street....how cool?

Well after 20-25 minutes water temp wasn't much over 160? Wired a second gauge to check if perhaps the gauge was wrong but 2nd gauge was within +/- 5 degrees (VDO vs ProComp).

I got the 2nd replacement FlowKooler Robert Shaw 180F thermostat with Summits apology 12 hours after I called them and I
said the one they sent did not open up....no hesitation...they said I did the test right and would send out a replacement....so great service from Summit....and yes this is the same 351-C thermostat that AJ said Dan's recommended....so AJ AND DAN are to blame

here ;-)>

So for JB's, Russ Fulps and Mike T's benefit who haven't been following this idiot thread I will add a little history here because I am baffled and need more then the usual hugs.

The last time Dick installed Russ Fulps overhauled engine with MikeT's IR-EFI Dick showed me a trick 2 years ago to test the thermostat was working before it was installed....which was to get water heated up and at a +/- 160 the hat popped up or open WITH the 160 thermostat....which it did with in seconds of immersion in the hot 160+F water.

As
a side note I have had perfect +/- 180-190 water and oil temps in WOT at the SORC and the SSCC orr's for last 3 years with out any problems (7-8 orr's)a.....however running on the street at legal speeds unless it is a hot 85F day and/or the car is sitting still for 20+ minutes in traffic or more ( which I agree is not often) I can NOT get the water and oil temps up to operating temps unless I stand on it...not advisable around here! ;-).....

When the water temp does go up so does the oil temp and to Dicks credit the temps stay in the 180-200 range no matter how long I sit in traffic....which happened driving back from Reno a couple weeks ago. Soon as I came down off the H-395 and the Sierra's to the I-15 freeway it got HOT and the traffic was moving at a crawl from San Bernadino to Huntington Beach so in that case the water and oil jumped up to 180-190 and the engine ran beautiful at 5-15 mph!
;-)))

Okay, great learning tool/lesson from Dick but the one Summit sent yesterday and TODAY did not open up or 'appear' to open up....and yea as MikeT suggested I watched for a slow opening and that did not happen either.

So I am imagining <grin> I have FUBAR?

With the new replacement thermostat in hand and a second new thermometer in hand I once again heated the water to 160, then 170, then 180, and place the thermosat back in the water......watching and waiting for the thermostat to open was like watching paint dry.....nothing happened......temps went to 190-200.....I waited easily 20-25 seconds....and then stoppped....YES thermostat fully immersed in heated water.

TEST #2 Same except I let the thermostat sit in water watched for any hat movement and again
nothing happened....water boiled....thermostat did not 'appear' to open..

I give up...wanted to get it installed before efi tuner comes by tomorrow so if you have any suggestions let me know. Yea, I don't want to pull the existing 160F thermostat out of the block this close to tuner visit tomorrow morning....he's adding wide bad sensor so I don't need to change out the thermostat today or tomorrow for him to do his thing.

Mad Dawg Antenucci
Team Pantera Racing

The 1st & still the only vintage race team in open road racing
www.teampanteraracing.com
