- AAA helpful most of time except two events not thrilled about. One, was leaving Ferrari repair place in LA with the 400i and wanted to tow home. Car has very old metric Michelins and shouldn't be driven far. I scheduled tow but no AAA truck ever stopped although we watched truck drive by the place. Called AAA again and was told no one could come and to book appt. for morning. Was with brother so we decided he'd drive home and I'd follow in Fiat. So couple blocks and HUGE amount of smoke pouring out from one of tailpipes. Called him to pull over and park. Something definitely wrong. (Long painful story you don't want to know, suffice it to say I had to have the entire fuel distributor rebuilt that they had worked on and evidently screwed up.) Had to leave car on public street there overnight. Had trip to Portland planned next day so this all very bad timing. Drove back next morning in Fiat, had arranged a tow by phone with AAA beforehand, 10am.....no one came. Call AAA again, waited forever, finally guy came, took a look and said, "Oh we don't tow Ferraris." and he drove away. That's funny as that's how I got the car there in first place. Called again and their computer voice system is a pain you know where. No one able to come hours later they told me to get my own tow co. and I'd be reimbursed. Had difficulty finding any tow co. to tow this car, the 12 miles home but finally did find one. I should have called Larry Stock. He's an expert with the car as he rescued me from the wharf in Monterey at a Pantera Fun Rally years ago. : ) That was when I needed two alternators. The De Tomaso Gods had put a hex on the Ferrari at a POCA event. So back to LA story, tow was $500. for the 12 miles. (I probably owe him but it's past the statue of limitations : ) Then after countless calls to the right AAA dept., finally got reimbursed.
Then the other problem was when I went to AAA to pay registration on the Fiat and had already sent in timely payment by mail for my Trailblazer. Gal said well Trailblazer due today so just pay it here and DMV will tear up other check when they get it. WRONG. Went to DMV to get reimbursement and showed them two payments, they said had to go to my bank and get proof with back of cancelled checks for proof I paid twice. Another pain! Did that... back to DMV and patiently (???) waited my turn. They handed me a form to fill out for reimbursement that time which I did, and mailed in. Still no credit for months. Evidently I hadn't gotten the smog check to complete registration. When regis. almost due again, I got it smogged. Now that I think of It, I'm wondering if I ever got the reimbursement doh!!!
So if you had patience for that long saga, I'll send you my latest experience with taking the AARP Safe Driving Course I just completed.
