[TPR] Fwd: Silver State classic May 2012 240 MPH Fastest car in USA Jim Peruto

That dip at 140 was nothing, at 160 was an E-Ticket experience for me, then there was Junior Wilson who reportedly took it at 235 with that big aft wing and did two or tree backflips before his unsuccessful wheels up DNF landing in the desert.

Hellva story Dave....thanks for sharing.

My horror story at one of the early ORR's was at SS and it was hitting the dips hard (the first one) at about a buck sixty. In a couple H-318 road repaving's the dips after the work are not as bad today or even last year and yet as you noted Dave and Larry its the coming down hard that hurts.

I bent the two rear quarter panels on my Pantera I hit so hard. And coming down the ass end of the Pantera came lose but with no help from me did straighten itself off and luckily the trans went into neutral otherwise it could have been worse.

Course notes said exactly where the dips began and ended and there was allot of discussion fand it was graphic about suspension damage coming down hard off the top of that first dip. But by the time I got to the dips I was already speed drunk. Yep the throttle goes in two directions and my lesson learned was pay attention to your course notes or have a trusted naviquesser in the right seat. One I have never had.

Scotty was never the same after your ride! haha

I got the picture…..now got the picture even better!!!

FEW cars ( or none ) have a perfect 50/50 balance on weight. NONE have specs on aero ( without wheels touching ground), since they aren’t meant to be airborne!!

1.7 seconds is an ETERNITY!!

Airborne for us was often, but may have only been an inch on a falling away road. Landed flat & smooth on four wheels EVERY time.

ONCE came down tooo hard on Hwy 285. Crested hill on Hwy 285 North of Sanderson @ 185 MPH. Came down flat, but a harder than normal. Even the side skirts hit. The drain plug on oil tank hit a plastic reflector in centerline of road ( part of it imbedded in aluminum tank )……& ripped the whole welded drain bong outta tank. ( WE HAD CRESTED HILL OK on Southbound leg, but we were low on fuel @ that point. NOW I had a full tank, & oil tank also in rear) Weight balance now against me!!

PLUS, NO SECTION OF ROAD IS THE SAME IN BOTH DIRECTIONS.

I didn’t know I was pouring out 3 gallons of hot oil on the road behind us!! ( Scotty Cardwell my Nav )

I was too busy negotiating turns ahead over next couple miles….when I noticed Oil Guage needle fluctuating Wildly!!!!!

I instantly shut down!!! Saw the roof line of Stegall Ranch on West side thru the trees!! ( the ONLY house I think on the whole road )

I was on the brakes sooo hard to make the driveway….Scotty yelling in intercom that his four point harness was hurting him!

GREAT PLACE to stop. Like an oasis. 20 people watching the races. HUGE BBQ!!

Maybe 1 ½ hrs later, In last speed class…..along came ranch owner!! Going by, in 85 mph class!! ( Bobby Stegall ) He had entered his old ranch pickup truck.

I was now on my 3rd or 4th or 5th West Texas Margarita!!!!

Slurring my words as Bobby flew by….proudly raising a Toast to his success!!!

“ 1969 Chevy Pickup truck…………….…HE BEAT ME TOO!!!!! “

We crested the Route 305 hill at our 167MPH Tech speed (246 feet per second) for this event, the next course note read ”CAUTION BRIDGE, reduce speed, Possible airborne” So I followed directions precisely and reduced to a 155MPH cruising crawl, (228 feet per second) it sure didn’t look like much until we were right on it, then I just remember a millisecond flash of what then looked like a 10” high cinder block wall bridge crest, and we were off. It was only for about 1.7 seconds (you do the distance math, an end zone and beyond air pass) of nose up, then level, then a nose dropping crunch. Yep, my downforce front spoiler took the nose down first. Didn’t start out that way on take-off, but when you are in the air, the Aerodynamics trim design will take over, for some, for the worse, for me, this time, for the better.

I know what you mean!!

Intercom: I tried a motorcycle intercom in 2004. That was useless above 40 mph. (Got money back)

Then bought aviation ear plug style. Worked great.

M&M car: loudest, noises tin can you can imagine!! First time Navs said it was almost violent!!

I'd laugh: "My side of car seemed fine!!!"

We got air often @ BBORR. Not like you over bridge, but hill crests, it could be 4 - 5 times per leg.

But that part is easy.

Straight road, over crest, road falling away.....makes landing soft.

But ya gotta know controls don't work. You're just along for ride.

MOST IMPORTANT:

let off gas easy. Engine revving minor OK: But you don't wanna land with power on, or you break an axle!!!

Bad @ 20 mph....let alone idiot speed like all of us!!

We installed an intercom, since to yell at each other, I had to slow to under 140, and when you realize how far you travel at that speed we change zip codes to write a short note of “What was that?”

Can’t here the road noise at that speed, that’s all behind you, it’s just the wind noise coming at you that you hear. When your airborne, it’s still just the wind, but with a little horizon attitude amplification, and then the camera goes to snow upon the 14 point landing impact, that’s how we knew we stuck the landing. Oh yeah, the 14 points were, 4 tires and 10 hard chassis points including 4 of the underside of our seat rails where the concrete was imbedded into the U-Channel seat fastening rails. You tend to feel those 4 points much more than the others.

Love to see videos if you find them.

At high speed, it gets pretty noisy in car.

Airborne: everything gets QUIET!!!

Only for a second or two!!!!

Very few would understand what is happening!!!

At speed, it could be just an inch, but distance traveled can be kinda wild!!!

These SSC 200 MPH video’s are sparking a flame under me, sorry I’ve been so quite, but I’ve been under the weather after visiting my Daughter in Denver a week ago. I haven’t had a cold since January of 2020. But, After viewing these 200MPH video’s, I should figure out where my in-car Video’s went and try to figure out how to post them. Two come to mind, of course when we pulled up on the K&N Hennessy Viper at 202MPH, (I was radared unofficially at 194 while going away) and when we went airborne at 155 at the bridge crossing at the Pont Express.

Jim may have been in the 250 mph range. Long straight, slight downhill. Known to be a smooth section.
