[TPR] Fwd: Installing Harness Bar & 5-point harness

I do remember that whoop at 160, it really got my attention so that after that I always had plenty of speed in the bank to slow to 140 before crossing that whoop a mile before you begin the narrow’s. At 140 it was nothing, at 160 it was a double ‘E’ ticket ride. I think this is the same spot that Junior Wilson did a double back flip at a reported 230 MPH with that big rear wing he ran. Too much rear wing too far back, and around you go.

My biggest “help me ajezus” moment was on the old Pony Express (Hwy 305) Route. We were busting along trying to hold a 167 average course speed when we came over a rise, and in the course notes was “CAUTION, BRIDGE, POSSIBLE AIRBORNE” Note. Well since I am such a cautious Driver, I slowed to a mere 155 citing and over-abundance of caution. It didn’t look like much until we were right on it, I have this momentary flash memory of this 10 inch high, what looked like a retaining wall from my Pantera’s 40 inch elevation level. Later in viewing the on board camera system, Do you know how much distance you travel at 155 MPH, 228.2 feet per second, we were airborne about 0.75 seconds, or about 175 feet. Later inspection reviled that We made a 14 point landing, 4 wheels and 10 points on the underside including imbedded bridge concrete in the seat rails under our butts. On launch, The front end angled up, then the front air dam downforce aero effects took over, we flattened out mid flight, and landed slightly nose heavy, just like nothing. The camera went snowy with the impact, a slight back vertebra adjustment, sure glad we saw that course note. What if we hadn’t slowed down?

My scariest “help me ajezus” moment on course was coming down hard over the old woop de dos in 160 class close to 1998 and those dips have for the most part been smoothed out on road improvements of grading and chip seal during the last 20 years but originally when I first ran prior to 2000+ the dips were deep and I did not lift in time for the first and biggest dip and hit the first one at about 160 and the pantera came down hard and started to loose control to the left then right. I lifted on the throttle and the pantera with little effort by me straightened itself out.

The drop had pushed the trans to neutral which may have saved my ass as I did not reach down to put it back in gear until I had slowed down considerably. And finished the run but afterwards at the finish line Erik Belter pointed out my two rear quarter panels were bent basdly….Somewhere i have that photo.

'TREE' was subjective!!

Meant only to imply sheeet can happen at any moment

I've watched from a few feet away as a friend went thru curve...he was at his traction Limit... .all good til tires crossed the painted line!!! (Paint had less traction than bare asphalt)

His wobble looked small, but at 160 he almost 'Bought the Farm'!!!

My 'in car video' caught it as well as my eyes.

No link I think.

There were three race cars hit by the Corvette, AFAIK.

Why they were parked there is another question.

Cheers Bjoern

A woman in a corvette flipped 4 times. She was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. I did not hear anything about a tree being involved.

Mark, it is an excellent idea for any car at speed. And I will recommend to anyone planning to go fast.

But having said that there is no way am I putting a cage in the C8. Will be happy to run at slower speeds. Also have looked at photographs of many C6, 7 and 8 roll overs and the added reinforcement on A & B pillars did not collapse. Perfect example was the driver of the C6. She cart wheeled and rolled yet neither A or B pillars collapsed. I also got several other examples from Ken Rees who averaged 155 last Sunday in a C7. Ken had a conversation with a factory engineer who would only say the C8 and Z06 both have improved strength on A and B pillars which the C6 and C7 do not have.....or what GM calls 'enhanced' additional strength but no one at GM is going to say they are as good as a roll cage because they are NOT.

You need to get a hold full time roll cage.

I know at least 3 of you have C8 and or Z06’s on order for your back-up ‘OTHER’ car and wanted to say Asa did my 5-point on C8 today.

It was an all day job as seats and trim etc had to be removed, plastic and some upolstry around rear speaker had to be cut and glued back into place. The lap belt is still used and harness sits behind seat when not racing.

But it all looks great. Very happy with the work Asa did and his hourly rate is very fair.

Thanks Asa!
