Actually Owen, I am working with a local solar contractor to plan pretty much exactly that.  Solar with backup battery power and net-metering with the local Power company.  The generator is for when the batteries become depleted during the inevitable nuclear winter that will darken our skies.
Oh, sorry, got carried away there.  ;)
But yes, we are looking at various power and backup methods.  You know a helluva lot.  Great comments.

Maybe some of us need to come up with a battery powered generator that is rechargeable by solar panels. A reasonable size generator that can power your house 24/7 . Enough battery packs that switch on and off so your electric power never goes out. Maybe with enough surplus that the power company has to pay you for the surplus that you dump into their system. But what the hell do I know.

I was looking on Costo and came across these:

These are exactly the same as Generac, except priced lower through Costco.  At the price point I'm comfortable with, my plan is for the 22kW.

 Get 'er done.

Can't believe randy doesn't have a backup generator system.....takes me less than 5 min to have the whole whitehorseranch on generator gas/propane.we didn't have any power outage but roads around us and specially in palm springs are destroyed.i'm flying into palm springs wednesday night and might be tricky to get back to landers

Subject: [TPR] Asa & Randy Report      Since a few of you asked, here is latest from Randy just 5 miles away in Calif. who has no power or Asa who reported while he and family are now safe the surrounding area many friends lost buildings and homes. But for Asa it looks like cooling weather and rain may soon improve areas around Spokane.
In Randy's case he's had no power for 2 days and was over for showers and I told him to come by later for dinner and showers etc. Already suggested he just move here until the power gets back on. Yesterday I passed 5 big semi's with big power generators which they were sending to all those with now power in Crescent City to boarder of Oregon where power was shut down. Actually Pacific Power just turned off power as a preemptive decison. Dropping power lines.
