172.....because that was max allowed!!!
It was TOUGH to hold!!! Car kept telling me:

"Come On!!! Let's GOOOOO!!"

SERIOUSLY!!! It ran that speed easy!!!

I took it dealer for minor warranty thing a bit later. Told svr Mgr I was having trouble getting cruise control to work!!!
He was Serious as can be.. writing it up, asking questions about what I was doing!!

Cruise seems to work fine around town!! But above 150 it never seems to work!!!

Head in hands.....& deleting everything he write!!!wrote!!!!

PS I was asked why Jim put me ahead of Bobby In a much faster ride and the reason was Jim wanted to make sure I made it difficult for Bobby to pass.

My worst (best?) story of open track club racing at the big track at Willow Springs Raceway where we were running all weekend long with the Ferrari Club for the first time.

As far as I know this was the first time POCA had been invited to join the FOC at Willow. Subsequently we were invited back to Willow Springs as well as Laguna Seca and the big banked oval and infield road course at Fontana with FOC as many of us became friends with the FOC drivers.

Jim Saxton a good friend and great POCA organizer led the Pantera contingent onto the track on day 1 in his bad ass full race Pantera and I was in the number two slot AHEAD of Bobby Byers who was in the number 3 position on grid in Gary Hall’s Big Red.

Jim Saxton a great guy, good friend and an amazing humble politician also had convinced the Ferrari Club they would have zero problems with the Pantera guys. As Junior’s open track history and rep of black flags history had come up prior to our even showing up.

We knew ALL eyes in the paddock area would be on us. Jim had even taken Bobby and I aside and reminded us if we wanted to be invited back we needed to be cool or humble as Forest calls it and not pass the fastest Ferrari’s there.

Going into Turn 3 on the first lap Jim lost control of his Pantera and he rolled the Pantera over on its side right in front of me. I pulled over immediately and ran to Jim’s pantera which was laying in its side just inside the infield.

It was at that moment that I noticed fuel was POURING out of Jim’s Monza style fuel cap pouring down the hill. Closest Course Worker yelled at me to STAY IN YOUR CAR, but of course he could not see the race fuel flowing DOWN the hill towards my and the other cars which by now all had pulled over behind us.

I ran to Jim to help him get out and then that was challenge #3. Jim was a BIG man. Easily 250 pounds and he was struggling to get out of his harness while his race Pantera was sideways on the track.

I reached into Jim and was able to help him get his harness undone and then with the help of one of the Rescue/fire guys help an uninjured Jim up and out of the Pantera who was as humble as you can get after a FUBAR experience we watched as rescue crew finally got his Pantera righted and after the run was restarted there were no more incidents or accidents the rest of the weekend.

At the stand down later everyone was reminded again about cold race tires. And of course that was the cause of the accident. Power on hill with cold tires and Jim lost control.

But afterwards led by Jim who took ownership of his accident we all had gallows humor about the accident happy Jim’s fuel didn’t turn all our cars into a fireball and happier still Jim was okay.

If that fuel had ignited that sure would have ensured that there would NOT be another open track event with FOC at Willow Springs or any other race track.

As an after report Bobby/Big Red ran beautifully all weekend and later Jim’s Pantera was fully restored where he later sold it.

Good Times!

Kinda same territory!!!!!

I have a great ‘In Car’ video. 2009 BBORR. Due to health issues I hadn’t spent the time I wanted on M&M car. So took the Z06 & raced in 150 mph class. (RT still my Nav )

Stan Martin ( Moonshine ) was driving a modified Mustang….two slots ahead of us. 10 miles in, I caught & passed the car ahead of me. Maybe 20 miles in I caught Stan. It was right by road 2400.

I knew I wasn’t allowed to pass on corners, so I waited & followed 10 feet back!! ( bumper to bumper @ 150 )

Stan ran a line thru corner I was absolutely amazed at!!! He ran a High Line on outside of corner!! Perhaps that’s what he needed to do. ( NO WAY he could run corners like the Z06!! )

I was on a low line, didn’t even need to run wide & dive into Apex in middle. Car was taking it just fine……all at corner speeds about 150.

If race rules allowed I coulda EASILY passed him on inside of corner when he was sooo wide!! Woulda been comfortable!!

But I waited….& bided my time til corner done.

Stan swept down in middle of corner. When his tires hit the center line he lost traction & nearly LOST IT!!! It doesn’t look like much in video…..but at that speed…..you KNEW had his hands full!!! ( Stan told me later that ME being back there was NO problem…he knew I’d be a gentleman & give him room. )

But the wiggle on centerline….he nearly sheeeeet his pants!!!!

As corner finished, I was already pulling out to pass. Remember, we were nearly bumper to bumper, I was soo close at that time, I couldn’t see his tail lights!!!

I had NO IDEA he would run THAT WIDE to exit corner!!!! ( to me, it didn’t make sense, because the FEEL of my car, it was rock solid & NO need to run wide!!! )

He wiggled again as he realized I was passing!!! It was close….but not bad!!! I was already on the gas & could make little other choice!!

In video, as I passed, you can hear his exhaust noise……& it sounded GREAT!!!

But that was only a 2 second sound bite…….& the Mustang was in the mirror!!!

Survived all these times….either of us???????

We’ll have NO idea how we made THIRTY!!!!!

Had to laugh at Forests opinion of Pat and Gary.

“Full of themselves and never humble”.

Really?

And the problem was what?

It was clocked at ~206 using radar at Pocono when we were there. As you know, the track is run counter clockwise at club events. Pat Mical and others were clocking the car coming off the long straight before the long banked bend going down the back stretch. Gary was driving the car. I was once a passenger in a GT 40 going into that bend at 180 and nearly soiled myself... Gary was fearless and probably a little stupid about his limitations, until he crashed a dedicated Porsche race car at Lime Rock. Most of the other drivers did not like being on the track with him at the same time. One of my GT 40 friends refused to play with him... Both Gary and Pat were full of themselves. and never humble!

No, I didn't.

Where did the car do 206.. mph. I think it is just a lot of hype.

Did you ever see the PONE Express run at Pocono or meet Gary? I wonder if Wally is dead. Thought some of the video comments were funny. Gary was described as being very humble... I thought that he was funny but never humble!
