Book:  LOTS of new stories!!  Great motivator for Ernie to remember even more!!!
Plus he Lived thru ALL of those years.. .so had first hand knowledge of some!!!
Great in all directions!!!
Plus: it created a GREAT PHOTO OP!!!!!!

That was one GOOD book!!  Brother sent it to me.  All about good ole days of NASCAR.  Rule Bending/Breaking.  Getting caught or discovered.  NASCAR rule changes keep altering to NOT allow a new advantage!!!!!!   Funniest one about Darryl Waltrup.  At that time people putting lead shot in frame to add weight for TECH…..then getting weight out before race.  The guys kept getting caught.

Waltrup team found a way to hide an electric trap door to open from Inside the jack post so it wouldn’t be discovered!!  Then driver trip a switch & release weight after race started & nobody be the wiser.

PROBLEM: trap failed to open.  Weight stayed in frame & he didn’t know it.  Later he made a pit stop.  Using jack corrected the stuck valve.  As he left the pit the lead shot came out & guys in pits said “It was SOOOO slippery you almost couldn‘t stand up!!!!”

BUSTED!!!!!!

ORR: one time a ‘starter’ came up to me & nervously said:

“ Do you know that when light turns green…..YOU’RE ALREADY HALF A CAR ACROSS START LINE?????”

I smiled:

“YEP…………………..I know!!!”

UNL class: NOT like timing in all the other classes.  Fastest is Top Dog…….& I just didn’t want to be late!!!

Scotty is why I threatened to put ‘Chucks’ on right seat: M&M car G-Force in corners wasn’t what he was used to!!!

Got YEARS of laughter outta that!!!

Have NO idea how RT took it in Stride!!!  Never shook him up no matter how stupid it got!!!!

 I could ONLY get 'last season's' tires.  When they'd allow them to be sold..... I'd buy two or three sets.

Maybe 2004 I was getting them for $50 each!!!

NO DOT code .... so tech always Trusted me & went by what I said....Date I bought them!!  (Every race, Every Tech Group)

Then approx 2007 NASCAR rules changed.  They went to 'Renting' tires to teams....& price tripled.....inventory was insane to get!!!

BTW: Tech could see they looked new, & I was only getting maybe 250 miles to a set.  (Trust issue....as slicks show EVERY drift & rock mark)

Them were the old days!!!

Trust was valued then as today.....& Tech looked at what they thought was an Honest face......LONG before they spotted my photo in the Post Office!!!

Tires  per 2022 Rule Book

  Grand Sport  130 to 155  Tires are good up to 5 years old per rule book.  Z or W rated

  Super Sport 160+ tires must  be less than 2 years old.   Z or Y  rated

For those new to SSCC and have a racing license or extensive experience racing, you can apply for a waiver in order to run in a higher class.  Get in touch with the Dawg.

Hey team (Lee, Ransom & John and anyone else who have tire issues) the main thing to remember on tire Tech and that is Eric confirmed it tonight on the phone.

And that is if you show up to run in Touring or up to Grand Touring (140 Mph) if your tires are one week past the 6 year date code you are NOT passing Tech.

And if you want to run faster your tires can not be older then 3 years + one week. And no the purchase date doesn’t count as these are tech rules SSCC and NDOT agrees to.

Start with Highway robbery cost increases for everything but specifically these tires.

Then add ONLY 2 genuine US brands (Goodyear and Cooper are produced in the USA. Many others like a Michelin, Pirelli, Continental, Bridgestone, and Yokohama do have some plants in the USA but they are NOT producing them here at this time.
