There is a lot of debate about the proper oil temperature for endurance
track racing. Many say even up to 260 depending on oil type is ok. We
never like to see that on any of our cars. We generally shoot for under
220. So, while 220 is ok, we will be doing some more work to get it lower.
I can't resist one more story on spring rates at Daytona:
When I was racing the "AGT" class in the Rolex series at Daytona, the rules
were constantly changing. In effect, AGT was a then-current Trans Am car
converted to endurance spec (air jacks, bigger coolers, bigger tranny
gears, etc). Everytime we showed up at Daytona, we had to retest on spring
rates and ride height. It was incredibly competitive, and every second
counted. So, for each session, in addition to spring rate adjustments, we
incrementally lowering the car to get it down as low as possible. We
adjusted/lowered and adjusted/lowered and adjusted/lower. Eventually, one
of the drivers would be lucky enough to experience the car bottoming on
either the bump stops or the track. So it was like Russian roulette for us
drivers -- who was the unlucky one that got to experience the car going
instantly loose in between NASCAR 3 and 4 where the big bumps were at very
high speed (in that car, about 180 between Nascar 3-4). I was the lucky
one who got it one year during night practice -- and the car instantly shot
4 feet up the oval stopping inches from the wall. I can't recall if I
literally shit my pants -- but at the very least I shit my brains. We then
raised the car 1/16 of inch and were fine the rest of the weekend.
