Eric,
I have the same situation. Car with tires in the garage during 2020. Thinking about 168 Tech so I can spank Paul and Mark.

Thanks,

Dennis

Eric

I was told by you at the last Silver State you would let me run my recently expired tires one more year on my Viper. Do I get a Covid extension? The Car has unfortunately been garaged since then.

Subject: RE: TIRES.......was;Re: [TPR] 2021 T-Shirt

Bear with me, this will take a minute:

The Pantera came with a V rated tire as OEM. However, back then the V rating had a little different meaning than it does today. At that time “V” was the highest rating and it meant “Over 130 mph”. Much like (Actually EXACTLY like) today’s (Y) rated tires, how much over depended on the exact tire and car. So if a 1970s car was capable of 200 mph and came with V rated tires as OEM, those tires were tested to the top speed of that car. That does not mean you could put a V rated tire from a BMW on a Pantera and run it at the top speed of the Pantera.

The other thing to consider is the overall performance of the tire. Today we are encouraged to refer to it as a “Performance” rating and not just a “Speed” rating. “Speed rating” really over simplifies the description. Would it be accurate to say that a Toyota Supra was faster than a Prius? It would be accurate but fall woefully short of describing the overall difference between the 2 cars. I have been fortunate enough to be able to participate in several manufacturers’ ride & drive events where they equip identical cars with different rated tires and have us drive an autocross course in the parking lot. Top speed is maybe 45 mph on the best tires. I can tell you 1st hand that there is a significant difference in steering response, lateral grip, & braking at speeds below 45 mph. This is why in the industry we never install tires with a lower speed rating than the OEM tire. There are a couple of states that have actually made it illegal to do so as it is in most European countries, but in most states it’s considered and “Industry Standard” that exposes the installer to liability if not adhered to.

Where we hit a snag a few (24?) years ago is that a large number of Panteras wanted to come to the event and made the argument that their modern H rated tires were much better handling than the skinny V rated Goodyear Arrivas or Bias Ply tires the Pantera was originally equipped with. And they were right. And they argued that since they were all running in Touring they should be allowed. So we made an exception. An exception I heard about for the nest 20 years every time someone wanted to run a tire that didn’t conform to the rules. And then about what an Ass I am because I won’t grant them an exception like I did for the Panteras. I even had one guy who was a driving instructor with NASA threaten to run me off the track the next time he saw me.

Over the years we also had a couple of Panteras show up with tires that were too small and had inadequate load rating, but that’s not a situation unique to Panteras.

Anyway……..As the Pantera came with V rated OEM tires, V rated tires do meet the minimum requirement if you’re not going to tech over 140 mph. If you’re going to go faster than that you will need the appropriate W, Y, or (Y) rated tires for your class.

Lets discuss this subject.

I am copying Eric Petterson for opinion and it is Eric who has the final say on tires.

Tire load rating and speed is set by mfg. and correct me if I am wrong. We have had many guys running W and Z rated tires that have met the load and speed rating for a Pantera and passed tire tech.

We lost the argument a couple years ago that a V speed rated tire (149 MPH) could pass tech.

Erics ruling was 149 speed rated tire would not cut it. And totally agree with Erics decision in that case

Its a long story but my recollection is the argument was any car that was capable of 150+ MPH speeds (like the Pantera) needed a mfg tire that was speed rated in excess of the 149 MPH “V” rating.

Personally I have always run Y RATED tires in all the ORR events as long as they have been available.....but for the record I want Eric to give us his rule on this question so there are no misunderstandings.

ERIC?

Thanks,

Dennis

Hi Bunny,

Thanks foe the clarification...

I figured the Chihuahua race was a JV effort like the old La Carrera & LaBufadora Hill climb weekend. Question then is the Chihuahua still scheduled this year as well? And who is the Mexican partner? Is that Ed Everett?

Mark and I and maybe Paul Katchadourian are also interested in Running in Mexico too.

Thanks,

Hi Dennis.,

Just to clarify, there are only 2 Silver State races, NORC in May and the SSCC in September. Each driver receives 1 T-Shirt at registration and each navigator receives 1 T-Shirt at registration.

Everyone stay safe and I hope to see everyone at one of the races.

Team,

Thanks to Bunny Hill and the SSCC Board we got two Pantera’s on the 2020-2021 SilverState event shirts. Thank you Bunny!!

The first Pantera # 468 is Mark’s Pantera and the other Pantera may be the artist’s rendering as I can never remember in 25 years of seeing it but it looks purdy as all heck so we will have to come up with some folk TPR legend. 😄

The shirts will be on sale in May at the NORC in Ely. Again everyone who registers to race in any of the 3 SSCC events gets two (2) shirts at no added cost.

REGISTRATION: Note May is coming up quick so make sure you plan ahead on maintenance and if you are planning to attend remember the 3-year rule on speed rated tires. Because the Pantera was designed and built to drive at triple-digit speeds tires need to meet either W, Y, or Z speed ratings. Doesnt matter whether or not you will be running the course at 100 or 150 MPH Tire Tech is not flexible on tires and wheel bearings. So come and have a great time but come prepared. Read the Silverstate rule book.

If you have any questions on that or any other questions or concerns please contact me or Asa. Still plenty of time to do everything to update and repair.

Good Morning Guys,

Just thought I'd let you know that since we did not race last year we are going with Mark's Pantera for this year's T-Shirt.

I think it looks awesome.
