[TPR] 200 MPH

YES, I am here to tell you all,  if you can make your Pantera slick enough, you can go 200 MPH with a 400 HP stock 351C engine.

I am currently traveling to the PCNC Christmas Party tonight so I am lacking some factual particulars at the moment, and It’s kind of a long story involving Rick ___, (who I understand has passed away) who used to do the radar speed certificates and Norm McDonald’s K&N’s Viper. That was when my Aunt Lucy had just passed away, and the funeral was that Sunday in Temecula, so I asked for grid position #001, with my navigator parking his Beechcraft at a nearby dirt runway airport near the end of Hwy 318, to then to fly me to the Funerial to be with my Dad and my crew was to transport the Pantera Back To Reno. That was the day I won the 150 MPH speed group, and Norm was running behind me with a 180 MPH tech speed and me at 165, Norm wasn’t happy about that, got in my face at the starting grid to express that I need to be checking my mirrors, as we would be passing me, cause he wasn’t runnin no 150 average, he just wanted to get home at a decent hour, but in more colorful language of course.

I have an in car VHS video tape somewhere showing us closing on Norm’s viper at 202MPH, after going past Rick in 4th at 165 and shifting to 5th as we pasted him. Prior to the run I had asked Rick if anyone had ever shifted passing his radar position at 165 MPH, he thought for a moment, and said NO. So, I promised him that I would shift going by him. So I did. We had been averaging 162 MPH down course to that point, and hadn’t seen Norm and his Viper. Rick said that I was early, and as soon as he heard me coming that he turned on his radar gun and as it was warming up there was me and Norm’s Viper. He recanted Norm’s liking to run 200+ MPH in violation of SSC’s safety speed requirements and telling him just because he’s a major sponsor, “ Don’t Let ME Catch you Speeding in my speed zone again” “So, there were you and Norm”. “Now Larry, you always been a good participant and have always followed the rules, and there was Norm, so I pointed the gun at Norm”  Just as I shifted to 5th gear, Norm went by me at 180 MPH as confirmed by Rick’s radar gun.

Well, there I was at 165 MPH, with a whole gear and a new gas pedal, so I went with my instincts, and put the pedal down, and off we went chasing down that Viper. Things happen quick at that speed but I remember it all in slow motion. We quickly accelerated to first reign in and then pull up on the Viper. I saw 202 on the GPS just as I was about to pull out to pass the Viper to let Norm know that the Lil OL RED Pantera still had something left in her for him, when I realized that, awe shit, I’m still in Ricks Radar Zone and I could get disqualified for this shit especially if I visibly pull out beside the Viper to pass him, so I got my senses back and let him go. Rick says that out of 225 SSC challengers participating that day that he only registered speeds on 224 of them, mine was missing. He said that he tried to get my speed going away, but that I was so close to that Viper that he didn’t think he could report a reliable speed reading. I asked him “What kind of unreliable speed reading did he see?” He said “ you know they talk about Madd Dawg’s Pantera, and they talk about Jr Wilson’s Pantera, but that Red Pantera of yours runs out pretty good, ya know, don’t It”. “So what did you get?” I asked again, Rick replied “194”. He then added, “If I put down anything faster than your 165 tech speed, I would need to disqualify you, and Larry, You won that event group, didn’t you?” So I asked him what he was going to do? Later in the mail came my speed certificate stating my official speed at 165 MPH. (how far can a hand held radar gun register speed for, anyway?)

Apparently the only witnesses who really know besides me are Rick and Aunt Lucy, and my in car Navigator Gopal, and possibly Norm McDonald, with my in car mini VHS tape if I can find it and find something to play it back on.

No way Larry…..show me the speed trap because it’s not on any of the records for SS or Pony I have seen.,

Even with my 3.77 ring gear and taller 5th I could NOT pull more then 177 at SS in the speed trap…..I do not believe you hit 200 except perhaps at sea level. What I remember you saying was you did not have ENOUGH HP to pull faster speed.

Sorry to sound like a skeptic…..but while I DO BELIEVE a 3.22 ring gear is a must for a Pantera to go 200 at SS you need at least another 100-200 HP at the rear wheels.\\

But again show me the documented evidence of going 200 at SS and I will believe it.

Put a 3:20 in it Dennis,

I hit 200 easy

At 150mph I was at 4400rpm, could have gone 225 if I had your gonads

Great report Lee…thank you. But can it do 200 at Silver state?

Really? 🤨

As I think back my goal was never to do more then try and run a 150-160 Average in the Pantera which The Pantera never had trouble doing 170-175 at SS either even if Dennis did LOL ….but as we know and I trust the guys who have done 200 at elevation because 200 at elevation ON A OLD 2-lane crowned road aint the same as running at sea level on a good road…..just saying….it is just a little different but dennis has talked enough to junior and others to know even without the cow catcher on the front end of the pantera 500 Hp even at 7,000 is Not enough power?

Are those guys right?

The ford GT had 550 HP and was a 206 mph car. It weighs more than a Pantera and sits about the same height. I had one for a few years and parked alongside my Pantera. The cars a so similar who needs a GT? Unlike me I sold it. I was under the GT to see what made it so stable and it had a full belly really well fitted and the rear of the pan had huge channels to let the air escape. I would tend to believe the 500 plus Pantera with over attention to air control will do it and purchasing the best air control would make me feel much more like I was going to stay on the ground in the right position. When she goes she goes. Stick your hand out the window at 65 mph and you will be reminded of the wall of air out there and it's power. You can rotate your hand and find the best angle to cut the air. Your hand will produce lift too.
