[TPR] Timing adjustments

Alright you gear heads, I think I have a problem with timing.

I have a dual port (advance/retard) vacuum advance on a stock
distributor with Pertronix Ignitor III ignition.
Ported vacuum goes to the advance and manifold vacuum goes to the
retard. I don't have the instruction handy but that's how I recall it
was supposed to be hooked up.

Tonight when tuning, I had 45 degrees of advance at 3,500 rpm. That's
way too much, but at idle, around 600 rpm, I had zero. This is with all
vacuum lines hooked up. Therefore it appears I'm getting 45 degrees of
total movement out of my distributor advance mechanisms (mechanical
presumably the only thing affecting top end, but wait).

If I unhook the ported vacuum to the advance portion of the distributor,
I get way less than 45 degrees at 3,500 rpm. So now I'm a little confused.

The vacuum advance is adjustable, but I've lost my cheat sheet on what
to do when what happens; which way to turn for what symptom.

I dialed the distributor back until I got about 34 degrees at 3,500 rpm
to be safe, and then adjusted the mixture on the carb to get about 14.2
on the A/F meter. But now that give me about 10 degree after TDC at
idle, which just seems wrong.

I could use a little brainstorming here to help with timing. I'm done
for tonight but will attack it again tomorrow if I get time, otherwise
it might have to wait until Friday or this weekend. <sigh>

Thank you,
Asa Jay
