Hey all,
The first place finishers in the Silver State Classic Challenge were
treated to a Certificate from Optima Batteries for a free Battery of the
winners choice.

Having replaced the Pantera battery recently with a Sears DieHard
Platinum AGM, I didn't need one for that car. Instead I chose a
deep-cycle/starting Marine style battery for all-around general use. I
took delivery last week. Awesome... FREE Battery!

I've already used it to attempt recovery of -another- old spiral cell
battery from Napa. That battery was showing about 0.1 volt, and it's
been that way for a few years. Using a diagram and procedure from
Optima, I hooked the new battery in parallel to the old and the whole
assembly to a Battery Tender AGM charger. After about a day, the old
battery showed 8 volts when isolated. After re-charging the Optima to
over 12V, I now have the charger just on the old battery. We'll see if
I can bring it back to life.

If I can get that battery to recover, my first plan is to use both
batteries for a 30KW diesel generator I currently have that requires 24V
to start. I also plan to use it for other "mobile" Amateur radio
applications because it has two nice screw-on posts in addition to the
regular battery cable posts.

A shout out to Optima for sponsoring the Nevada Open Road and Silver
State Classic Challenge races. And thanks to my co-pilot for the win. ;)
