Asa,
Please build two of those while you are doing it......I would accept one as a Christmas gift.

Recall the engine presently in my Pantera came from my Mach I, which had a flexplate and automatic transmission.  The engine had been balanced for that car/trans combination.  When I refreshed it three years ago, I replaced rings, bearing and gaskets, that's all.  So it was still essentially balanced for the flexplate and auto trans.

The flywheel is from the original engine, still on the engine stand.  So no, this flywheel was not balanced with the present engine.  That's why the shop wants me to bring the flexplate (from the original build) and the flywheel/clutch.  They'll check the balance of the flexplate and try to match the flywheel and clutch.

During the SSCC run of 2013, it had a noticeable vibration.  After thinking about it more, I believe it's a imbalance in the flywheel/clutch.  I still have some troubleshooting to do to get more comfortable with that being the cause, but I think it is.

My other option is to build a whole new engine (stroker, solid roller cam, blah, blah, blah) <insert evil genius laugh here> and have it all balanced properly from the get-go.  :)

unless you have switched from the stock flywheel, the flywheel is not interchangeable.  It is balanced with the rest of the rotating parts.  Changing the flywheel at this point will for sure introduce an imbalance.  What problem are you trying to solve?

From the Pantera Research Institute - Pacific Northwest chapter.

Today I called around looking for a place that could balance my flywheel
and clutch.  I found one. He reiterated that I needed to be sure the
vibration was engine speed related, i.e. do I get the same vibration in
every gear at the same rpm?  I've only managed to drive the Pantera a
couple of times and not been focused on the vibration aspect.  I'll
definitely get out to do that once the weather gets better and the
driveway dries up (it's a bit on the muddy side at the moment).

He said to bring in the flex plate that was part of the engine setup
previously, and the flywheel and pressure plate.  For about $70 and a
week, he said he can balance it all up for me.

All I have to do is pull the ZF to get at it all.  Seems that while I'm
in there, maybe I should replace the flywheel and clutch with something
even better.  But then again, what I have in there now is only a few
years old.  Stock heavy flywheel and a Mcleod clutch.  I should probably
 stick with what I have.

Besides, if I'm going to do the deed this year, I'll need new tires and
maybe a new carb.  Hopefully gas prices stay low.  :)
