[TPR] Carb and fuel pump

I dont know shit from shinola about carburators or engines but this much I know...most of you dont know WTH your talking about....

I averaged 140 MPH in my 1st orr and ran it with a mild 400 rwhp strokker. I was at the limitsof that 400 RWHP...FWIW I ran a flowed 650 double pumper but I think its nkt the prkblem....keep in mind running a constant 130-135 "average" at SS at 'elevation' at Ss is just a little (sorry) different then running the same speeds at sea level out to flatlands 《grin》....okay I will grant you I am a Pantera GOD (YEA I SAID IT)....Lets be honest when I am gone the legend of ME (No 'I' in TEAM) goes with me....you dont need fuel injection..you need a set of SNOW BALLS....HAHAHAHAHA
Dawg freezing in California where farmers fjnally hate Mother Nature more then us building a bullet train...lowered by a stock 600 ford motorcraft factory carb. ;-))))))

No disrespect here....but add triple digit temps, head and side winds and well for 17-18 years I have been hearing how everyone and Godz dog (Dog) would and could run faster then me....only Bob Benson and JB came "close".....but that is only because  they didnt put a block of wood under their throttle...so I would start tbere with that REV limitor JB mentioned

Add heat and headwinds to a weezing engine is like watching most of you old fokkers run a block like you have an extra 50 to 100 pounds....so either lose the weight slackers or gain a 150 Hp ;-)))

I don't have an MSD rev limiter, though I do have a limiter set for about 6,300 rpm on my Pertronix Ignitor III module.

I don't honestly recall what RPM I was running at 130 MPH; I was concentrating on time, mile markers.  But according to the RBT gear ratio calculator, I should get 130 MPH out of 5,000 rpm.

It might also be, being an emissions carb, that it's jetted too lean.  I need a good dyno session to really understand that part.

It's good to get the ideas out there.

Asa, remove your msd rev limiter. :) seriously, 600 cfm is plenty. Mph is not very helpful when contemplating carb size. What was the max rpm you could do? JB

I have stock size fuel lines (recently replaced rubber though), and what is probably a stock mechanical fuel pump.

I ran the K&N Triangular Air filter shown here:

Plugs appear pretty clean.

Hi all,
I already sent Asa some info . . .

It would seem, for whatever reason, he is not getting enough air and/ or fuel.  ????  I run HUGE fuel lines (compared to recommendations) on most everything.  Still believe the 460 goes lean - time for a Robb super pump?

So, Asa, bigger air filter? bigger fuel lines?  Fuel pump running to spec?

have fun.

Dear Bud,

Boy, I hate it when someone throw real world experience and evidence in the middle of a theoretical discussion!  Nicely done.

From your experience, I think we can eliminate the 600 cfm Holley as the culprit and consider the other potential causes.

FWIW -- I have had a gps reading of 147 mph with a 600 cmf Holley and stock style aftermarket fuel pump. Engine was running iron 4V heads, .030 over bore. Isky hyd cam.

Asa,
How restrictive is your air intake apparatus?  If too restrictive,  that can have dramatic effect, imagine an asthmatic running a marathon.

Hi all,

This year (2013) at the Silver State Classic Challenge, I recorded a top speed in the trap of 130.7 MPH.  When I reached the countdown to the trap I was already doing just shy of that to bank time before the Narrows.  I consciously pressed the accelerator a bit more to push her up to a goal 135 MPH, but nothing happened.

I speculate at 130 MPH, I'm using up all the carb, or all the fuel pump.  One, the other, or both.

The Carb is a Ford stamped Holley list with these numbers:
D8PE-9510-KA
LIST 8414
3113
This link shows my email back in 1999 with info from Holley that I obtained.

Apparently it's a 600 cfm.  it has vacuum secondaries and three-quarter turn emission lockouts on the mixture screws.  I've put a standard rebuilt kit through it once or twice.  It's been a really good carb, but I don't know it will pull more than 130 MPH.

What to do.
As always, money is a bit of an issue.  I'd like to install EFI but that's really expensive.
I'd like to keep it responsive at low rpm like she is now, but still have the throughput needed at higher rpm at top speeds.  I think this leans me toward a vacuum secondary rather than mechanical.  I'm sure the cfm needs to be cranked up, but would 650 do it or should I head for 700 or higher?

Does anyone have one they'd be willing to part with?
Should I send mine into someone like Chuck Nuytten and have them do their magic on it, replacing metering blocks and other mods?
Should I just buy a new one?

The engine is a 351C bored .030 over, stock stroke.
Heads are DOAE, quench chamber.
Cam is a Crane hydraulic roller with these specs
<mime-attachment.png>
Intake is an FPP 4145
Stock ZF transmission

I've got some time so I'm looking for some informed/experienced opinions on what carb would be best.

And since Professor Engles from the Midwest Division of the Pantera Research Institute is engaged with Fuel pump questions, I'll just follow his thread on that part. :)

Thanks,
Asa Jay
