Hey all,
Ever since I've owned my Pantera, the passenger side rear splash shield
mounting bracket has been broken. I never honestly noticed it until
some years back. The bracket was actually being used to sandwich the
lip of the fender, which gave the appearance of the splash shield being
flush with the bottom of the fender opening.
This bracket is spot welded to the inside of the fender in two places.
One is the seam where the fender and rocker meet, and the other is at
the bottom seam of the rocker.
How do you weld this sucker back in without destroying the paint?
A MIG welder and some heat fence.
Attached is the result.
We cleaned all undercoat from the areas being welded on both the bracket
and the fender. We then clamped it to the fender at the bottom rocker
seam with a pair of Vise-Grips. We puttied up some Heat Fence on both
sides of the fender-to-rocker seam and went at it. I should mention
that it was a friend who did the actual welding.
Just for S&Gs we used an infrared thermometer to monitor the temperature
of the paint on the outside of the fender. It never got above about
140*. Nice! The other photo is of the fender exterior -after- the
welding was complete.
Now I can put all the decals back, -and- mount the splash shield where
it's supposed to be.... without needing to prep and paint the fender.
Oh this makes me a happy camper. :)
And, we also worked on the roll cage, making some fine tuning
adjustments. I'll be taking it in for powder coating this week and
hopefully have it back by next weekend so we can re-install it. Which
reminds me... I better order some roll bar padding.
