No, one can not. The stock firewall cover is one full panel from side
to side, up/down. The modification needed is to make the center part
of the cover removable, much like the bulkhead cover itself.
Jack DeRyke wrote up a procedure for modifying your own cover, in a
newsletter article a few years ago. Kirk Evans makes a few different
kits that are two piece firewall covers. You can get it as raw
materials that you take to your local upholstery shop and have
covered, or as a completed set you simply install. My plan was to get
a set from him.
Then, once the roll bar or cage is installed, you simply remove the
center from the firewall cover, then remove the center engine cover
from the bulkhead. No need to remove the roll bar or cage.
It's another reason I've not actually installed the cage yet too.
