Honestly Russ... it's been 10 years now. I'm beginning to even wonder
if the initial oil -was- non-detergent. I -know- it wasn't synthetic,
but that's the extent of what I remember. I probably ran it for about
500 miles and then changed the oil to whatever I was using at the
time. I think it was an off-the-shelf synthetic blend from Napa. I
moved back to Amsoil about five years ago.
I couldn't tell you what the clearances were, except to say they were
within factory specs at the time. If that means low end or high end
of the spec, I don't remember and apparently didn't document it either.
One thing I didn't do when the crank came back, was to make sure it
was clean. I made sure the journals were nice and clean but... I
didn't run a bore brush through the oil holes in the crank and I'm
betting there was debris in there I didn't know about.
The carb will be the Holley currently sitting on the Pantera, -not-
the Carter AFB that was running extremely rich on the Mach I. The
Holley is already tuned pretty well for the Pantera... though I may
send it out to be rebuilt to the engine specs I'm putting in. No
budget for that currently though.
The cylinders still show cross-hatching, even so I had planned on
borrowing a ball hone to run in the holes prior to assembly. The
rings still have gobs of tension. I hate to spend even more money I
hadn't budgeted, on rings. What's the downside of using them again?
Especially if they didn't seat the first time?
... and further to that question, what rings would you recommend?
Thank you,
Asa Jay
