[TPR] Shocks

You wanna know about shocks?
Yea I will tell you about shocks......I got to Vegas Tuesday with the Pantera
and I have a leaking rear ALDAN shock.

In fairness to Aldan these shocks have been on the Pantera 10-11 years or ever
since we installed them after the fire in '99.....so maybe I have got 30+ open
road races, lots of street time and never had a problem. Price has always
been right including a NO CHARGE rebuild for the two rear shocks to dial in 25%
more rebound to deal with the ever improving roads and infrastructure in
America. ;-)>    And they continued to work beautifully until Tuesday. I don't
know if the shocks sitting for the better part of a year while I was out of the
country helped but it is what it is.

Decided I didn't want to risk running at the NORC with a bad shock or new
replacement shocks (replace in pairs is recommendation) where I'd have to reset
ride height and complete alignment and road test....so I put the Pantera back on
the trailer. I was registered with a 180 Tech so seemed foolish to take risks I
didn't need to. Yea I know that sounds odd but I want my gear and rear safe.

I will visit Aldan next week (they are not too far from where I live) and talk
to them but other then this one failure I have never had any problems with Aldan
in the past so I would recommend them again .....and this is my second set...the
1st were the old steel single adjustables which were on the Pantera from 1985 to
1999. Again no problems.

Subject: [TPR] Shocks

Hey all,

I recently got a nice promotion at work, which means I can start
saving for car parts again.  First on my list and probably not able to
purchase until October, is a new set of coilover shocks.  The
following are what I know about:

Koni
QA1
Aldan
Telecar

Well, we all know what I think of Telecar by now so I won't even
consider those.  I've heard some stories about Aldans leaking pretty
soon after rebuild, but they -are- rebuildable.  Same with QA1 and Koni.

So my question to you, the knowledgeable Pantera racer, is:

- What shock do you run?
- What kind of experience do you have with them?
- What kind of racing are they suitable for?
- What kind of adjustments?
- Did you buy them new?
- Have they needed rebuilding?
- What has been your customer service experience?
- What about mounting? (bushings available or not, custom machining, etc.)

I'm personally leaning toward the Koni's mostly because I can get them
all set up and ready to install from Pantera Performance Center, but I
also know Julian has had a lot of good things to say about QA1, and
Dennis has had a lot of good things to say about his Aldans.

Let the collective braintrust begin the discussion.
