MD,
Everything seems to be under control - get that fan working!
"Everybody" says oil/water should run about 210 (non of my stuff runs that hot) to "boil" off condensation - I believe long drives at 180 should be fine. Something to think about if you worry about that stuff.
Have fun at crapple - those new Ipad2 gizmos make great gifts for the race team. . . . . .
cheers,
David in Durango

Subject: [TPR] HOT ROAD TEST - thermostat & cooling fan
Road Test after adding 180 thermostat...here's results...
It got to a blistering 74F at noon today :-]>
So Idecided to get in heavy midday traffic and see if I could warm it up.
1. It did not warm up any faster (replacing the 160F with 180F)
2. It slowly made it to 180F rather then 160 so that is a BIG plus
3. 02 temp was slow to 180F but stayed at 180-190 long as I was moving...was thinking maybe air in system...
4. I sat in traffic going no where and watched water temp slowly go to 200 then stopped at 200F......I flipped the cooling fan switch on to be safe....cars started moving again and so did I.....temp stayed at 200 but soon as I got home (total trip 25 minutes) and parked the water temp then went to 210-220 but no higher....I got out to check the COOLING or cooking fan and it wasn't moving.....shut engine down. . .Restart engine, check again and cooling fan NOT going on which it should have.
5. Probable cause- I hit some debris coming back from Reno in June which wedged itself between back of radiator and cooling fan which I stopped to dig out...and probably disconnected cooling fan wire when that happened.....
In summary while the coolant did not go to 170 or 180F any faster it did get there eventually which it would NOT do before with the 160 thermostat on the street driving....so happy about that.
Otherwise guys I am packing and getting ready to leave for Bay Area to start new project.....will be in touch in next week. Thanks again to Art for his invaluable hands on wrenching help and to all those who sent emails....
In any case I should be READY to run SS. I have NEVER seen water temps above 180F at WOT or at least I haven't in 3 years since Dick added the Ron Davis cup radiator.
See ya
