I wish I could hire you Brian and allot more Americans.....There is one American surveyor on our team and he is a naturalized Filippino American who wants to move back to the Fillipines to live because he can't afford to live in the states.....
Twenty years ago every one of the surveyors and engineers working for me in Saudi Arabia were American or European. Now they are all Arabs, Indians or Filippino's. . .not just here in Saudi but also in Afghanistan, the rest of the Gulf States, Africa and Asia.....
Clients will still pay for American designers and executives like Mike Trusty and John Bentley or even myself but for the other 95% of the overseas teams clients will only pay half the wages to a third country national wages and will pay no benefits or long term pensions.
Yea, it is very short sighted business plan and that is all these Arabs over here think in terms of....In the last 6 months I have been asked by clients several times how much it would be to replace a TCN (third country national) with an American only to be told they are still over priced.....as our Europeans.......When I give them the numbers it will take to hire professionals to do the work they don't want to spend the money.
Ultimately clients end up paying the extra money they think they are saving for the added delay costs they say they can not afford. There are no commercial or public works projects on time and under budget anywhere in the Middle East...and that includes DOD and USAID contracts.

The attached photo shows two Indian engineers (both electrical), one Pakistani land surveyor, one Indonesian quantity surveyor, one QA engineer from Bangladesh, and 4 Fillipino engineers (2 civil, 1 mechanical, 1 tunnel)....and then one yankee mutt at the end of the table who can't do anything....so we got some muslims, some hindu's and some christians and someone who no one can figure out what the hell he knows..... All these guys are all educated senior engineers who have been around a long time.
They have all spent most of their married or single lives living and working overseas away from home in places like Saudi, Iraq, Africa, Asia, or one of the other Gulf states working for American, European and an increasingly Saudi owned engineering firms. I like to get these guys to think outside the box occasionally by asking them stoopid mad dawg loyalty questions like,
"Who is the best American boss you have ever had?'.....usually they will look at one another for some help and don't know what to say except this one time I asked that question and one of the Fillipino's immediately said,
"who is paying for dinner Mr. Dennis?".....;-]>
Yea, he got the bill.

Having worked with a lot of Indian engineers, I can tell you all the secret here. They are book-smart people that have no practical hands-on experience of anything at all. They are good when operating a keyboard, but have no clue as to which end of a screwdriver to hold. The physical world is out of their touch. They can do an initial "paper" design, but unfortunately the real world is not digital and any design needs an occational tweak to operate properly.
After one particular sightseeing flight over San Francisco with a visiting engineer, when we returned to my hanger I asked him if he did any work on planes, cars, etc. and his answer was "We don't do any tinkering like that"....... There you have it, for anything that does not involve a keyboard entry, there will be problems (at least in my experience).
Additionally they still live by the Caste system where you are placed in society by your family history, not by your abilities. Not a good combination. I have worked with engineers from percieved higher Castes that were not in a position suitable to their talents.
I do have some good friends that are Indian, but I can think of only one that has any mechanical aptitude at all.

Now you got me started.....and I have not had coffee yet.
Who was it that said,
"We have nothing to fear but fear itself"...I mean besides me? ;-]>
Look, I work with educated so called professional engineers in construction and IT technician's who are Indians and I don't think we have much to worry about there. I am allot more concerned by Obama or the lack of jobs for Americans, and the U.S. deficit then I am of being replaced by Indians.
We just kick their Indian asses on every quantitative or production and quality issue I have ever had to be a part of. And that does not even address their lack of independent thinking or their inability to make decisions on the go unless someone is there wiping their ass they are just not programmed in real life terms to make decisions on their own without close supervision....
When I look at our kick ass engineers like JB, MikeT, Kirby, Dick, AJ to just name a few of our guys who also like to GO FAST who are not only GREAT engineers but GREAT leaders who can also design it, built it, run it, construct it AND fix it....does anyone really believe there are Indians who can do what these guys do?
Getthefokouttahere!
The Indian engineer or contractor will have their perspective asses handed to them in any kind of work environment or competition where they are going head to head with Americans or Europeans.
On job sites overseas we have even had to mix nationalities on construction and engineering teams because a crew of all Filippino's as an example doing the same scheduled scope of work as Indians will just kick the Indians asses in every aspect of the work and will finish it on time and under budget and then ask you for more work.
When I talk to our IT guys who are American or European they are are just so far and ahead of any of the Indian engineers I have had to deal with professionally I really don't have time to wait days or weeks for an answer to a technical question which is what it is going to take when I talk to an Indian engineer.
I could be wrong here but again I don't think we have much to worry about..... We make great products and given the same opportunity to sell our products or services ANYWHERE in the word (you reading this President Obama) we will kick ass except maybe for how well we run CALL CENTERS for American Express although don't get me started on calls to Customer Service. When I hear,
"Hello this is Billy, how can I help you?"....and he sounds like the guy running the 7-11 store near your house you gotta wonder, 'hey, maybe the dawg is right this time' ...You KNOW I am
right. ;-]>
I think the best thing we can do is continue to kick ass. And speaking of kicking asses I got a great letter from Rich Hoppe the other day who many of you know telling me about his new race engine but I was touched by his hiring of a fellow Marine veteran he hired at his business.
Now Rich (like the "Hawk") should both be telling us soon about their killer new race engine in their Pantera's but my point of rambling on like this is so allot of you who were hit hard in construction or manufacturing or engineering in 2009 or 2010 and had to make some difficult decisions and adjustments in your life know things are gonna get better.........hell probably every one of YOU reading this has had their jobs, careers, or retirement investments hit hard or turned upside down by this recession in the last couple years.
But in this particular case I am mentioning Rich because I know he needed to hire someone for his company and he hired a vet like you Brian. I am not saying we shouldn't hire the most qualified person for the job but I am saying young guys like you Brian have earned it. And many of us old dogs are or will be in a position to do that in the new year so I hope all of you will who can.
Personally I am more interested in kicking the ass of any Wall Street banker or mortgage lender or underwriter I can find then I am any poor Indian trying to make a buck or a ruple.
Okay, you can take that to the bank.... ;Aren't you sorry you even answered my email Grasshopper? -]>

MD,
I knew it was a sarcastic spoof but the possibility is real. Today, more and more people work for call centers for all types of business. Even engineering firms contract highly technical design work to home based freelancers as I did years ago. It is easy to place a job hired by one at home in the hands of less payed third world individuals. It is more a matter of morals. Most of your computer scams and attacks come from highly knowledgeable people in those countries. They are good at what they do and far from the reach of US law. The internet and will of someone to do this is very possible. My eyes are wide ass open.
Happy New Year J

You have got to be kidding…. Americans are already lazy and getting lazier by each hand out… Oh, and when I say Americans, I am not referring to the honest hardworking minority. I should probably have a better name for them but unfortunately they were born on my soil….

Watch both episodes in the onion. Right now I am thinking about setting up an office in Bangladesh or Republic of Congo....very talented yet low overhead. Women, booze and operating costs all very low.
