Dear Dennis,
I had a similar experience at a less famous track in
Oklahoma. At the Hallett track, I would join the Porsche club for a
driving school. I quickly learned that stock Pantera brakes-even with
upgrades-barely kept me from smacking the rear end of turbo 911s at the end
of the straight before Turn One. A couple of those breathtakingly marginal
stops convinced me that a) I had to get better brakes and b) those Porsches
have Ach du Lieber!--good brakes.
Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

Autocross is work...too much work. ;-]>
The 1st time I had the Pantera on the track in SCCA Solo I events was at SIR
when I still lived in Seattle. It didn't take long to find out once that
Pantera ass end snaps around there is little you can do to recover it....and
with only 1 set of tires I didn't happy the money or luxury of a dedicated
set of race tires.....so while I have experienced where and usually when
the pantera will 180 I had the best experience in open track or ORR events
just improving my driving skills through through turns and learning the
'course...not apexing too early or too late. Now I am just happy to drive a
little slower, looking out the windshield instead of the rear view mirror.
;-]>
My best/worse experience and some of you may remember this was with the
Pantera's stock girling brakes at Laguna Seca in '97 when we ran with
Ferrari Club on Monday after Historics.....I had portafield upgraded pads
but stock calibers and rotors and at the end of 3 or 4 20 minute track
sessions of the day I was burning them up...figured wrong that I had ONE
more session the brakes would hold up to....I was wrong.... those old
Girling brakes, calibers and rotors could not handle much abuse...and with
that abuse came serious brake fade.....and more then I realized until I
really needed them.
Coming down off the hill on the last run of the day into the corkscrew I
passed several other cars but as I approached the lead car which was a
Ferrari boxer (recently restored) at turn 1 who was right IN front of
me.....
I didn't have enough brake..........quickly down shifted but was still
moving too fast so I had two choices;
1. slamming into the back end of the Ferrari (bad choice) or
2. go around him on the tightest turn of the course (not as bad a choice
but not good either) .... it was a 'no-pass' corner in my group but I made
it around the Ferrari and for my award I got a BLACK FLAG .....anyway by
the luck of the Pantera Gods I made the inside pass and didn't hit him or
anything else....I pulled into paddock area.....Ferrari driver came up and
smiled and said "nice pass dawg, is that your brakes I smell?!!"....... I
gave him a weak barely audible 'thanks'....and then realized I came close
to ending up with a Ferrari restoration....I think around that time I
thought about upgraded brakes! ;-)>
Yea, so I got those (C4 brakes) and still the best answer for a bad driver
like me is to just learn to stay off the brakes and improve my lines through
through the turns....yea and get a second set of track tires! ;-]>
