My first spin was in the Pantera out of turn #2 at TWS... I was voted as the
most improved driver on Saturday and of course that went to my head. I had
learned to come out of that corner in a nice 4 wheel drift and it was great!

On Sunday morning, feeling cocky and supreme, I nailed the throttle in third
gear out of good old turn 2 on the first lap under a yellow.

I then proceeded to do a 720 out of the corner into the grass.

After watching the world go around and around and I sat there feeling
foolish and both of us choking on the dry grass floating around the cabin,
the instructor let it sink in awhile and then asked 'What happened there?'

I replied, 'Idiot driver, cold track and cold tires.'

He said that I was absolutely correct and then we drove back and I got an
earful from the guy running the event.

'You spin, you're out of here! It was under a yellow! But since you did so
good yesterday, I'll let it go, but no more spins, OK?'

'Yes, sir... No problem!'

Humble and very chastened, we went out again and a few laps into the
session, we were heading towards turn 3 and the instructor said something as
I was starting to brake. I looked at him and said 'What?'

Big mistake... I looked back at the track and it was too late to finish the
braking and although I tried to make it, a 360 into the inside of the turn
was the result.

Drove back and the head instructor really laid into me until my instructor
said 'It was my fault.'

'What?'

'Yeah, it was my fault. I distracted him.'

'OK, Kirby. You get another chance! But no more spins or you're out of
here!'
'Yes, sir!'

Quite a weekend... but I learned a lot. I was told I was the only guy anyone
knew that managed to spin twice and still get to stay for the weekend.
I reckon everyone needs to spin their car at least once to know when it will
happen and why...
:-)
